Description
The edible seed of a huge South American tree (family Lecythidaceae) found in the Amazonian woods of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador is known as the “Brazilian nut,” or Bertholletia excelsa. A nut is defined as a hard-shelled fruit with a single seed. However, Brazil nuts are actually considered seeds as they come in large and tough pods about a baseball size. The nuts are harvested almost exclusively from wild trees in the forest, rather than from plantations. Brazil nuts are among the richest selenium food source. Brazil nuts are edible seeds from the Brazil nut tree, and they can be eaten raw or blanched. Brazil nuts have a high proportion of healthy monounsaturated fat.
